My name is Abigail Day and I am originally from Downingtown, Pennsylvania but have fallen in love with Virginia after attending James Madison University. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies with a concentration in math and science from JMU in May 2014. I also minored in Elementary Education and Educational Media. In May of 2015, I completed my Masters in the Arts of Teaching. I am a licensed PreK-6 teacher in the state of Virginia. Recently, I have been working on completing my Library Media Specialist Endorsement through UVA Wise. I will be qualified to be a librarian for the 2021 - 2022 school year.
While at James Madison, I was a member of Kappa Delta Pi for three years, two of those years, I served on the executive board. I also made connections with many families in the community through a job in a local church nursery. My summers were spent working at an overnight summer camp which I attended as a child. One of my most influential experiences from attending JMU was serving as First Year Orientation Guide, also known as FROG, with an amazing group of people. In this position, I had the chance to work with a wonderful partner to guide a group of first year boys around campus and through a variety of events during their first week on campus. After attending James Madison, I chose to make Richmond my new home. I have been working at G.H. Reid Elementary, a Title I school on the southside of Richmond ever since. My first year, I was in an inclusion setting with a co-teacher which really helped me to hone in on my differentiation skills. With students ranging in reading levels from Readiness to 4th grade, I have continued to use the differentiation skills learned that year as I continue my teaching career. As I am now in my 6th year, I have seen my first year students be successful and go off to middle school. Working with new students each year brings me the same joy as that first group of students. I have also been involved in various committees to help improve our school culture including the Leadership Team, the Spelling Bee Committee, and the Field Day Committee. I became an academic architect for the 2020 - 2021 school year and developed lots of engaging and interactive online activities for 2nd grade science. Other than working with children, I have a variety of passions. I enjoy reading, Jodi Picoult is my favorite author. One of my favorite things to do with my free time is to bake; one of my goals is to try every recipe I have ever pinned on my pinterest board. I like to be kept busy and one way that I choose to do that is by spending time with my friends and family. There is a broad range of ages in my family and I have enjoyed watching my young cousins as they have grown up and continue to grow up. My family experiences impact who I am in the teaching profession. |
